Once drifting away like falling petals, I almost missed, missed the date we made in the night light. Even return here now, going back seems no avail, but how it could be forgotten.
From Zhang Yan (Song Dynasty)
Distant Music-to the Tune of An Xiang
Zhang Yan was the last well-known poet in the Southern Song Dynasty. Being a descendant of an honored family in the Song Dynasty, he lived in Lin’an for the first half of his life with luxury. But after the demise of the Song Dynasty, his family fortune declined, and he led a wandering life in poverty in his later years. He deeply embodies the artistic nourishment of the poems at the end of the Song Dynasty, and his work was characterized by “empty” and “elegance”. These quoted lines are from the ending of his poem “Distant Music-to the Tune of An Xiang”, An Xiang means faint fragrance, and there are several mimicking links with this microscopic image also named “Faint fragrance”. Here, it describes flowers without mentioning flowers. The empty brush touch and purple blue color conveys an ultra-distant artistic conception of reminiscence of the past, sadness and desolation.
