How can you be made to meet me
When I am in my most beautiful moment?
For this
I have prayed for five hundred years
Asking Buddha to arrange for us to keep company.
Buddha then made me a tree
By the path you would take.
In full blossoms I’m cautiously waiting in the sun
Every flower carrying a hope of my previous life.
From Xi Murong
A Blooming Tree
These are the first two stanzas of a modern poem by Xi Murong in 1980. It expresses a girl’s beautiful craving for love, and transforms the girl’s infatuation into a flowering tree that grows on the road the sweetheart will pass, full of imagery beauty. The latter section of the poem is not quoted here. It is hoped that this moving picture of a scene of life can be fixed at the turning point where the poet takes a train and looks back at the flowering tree. Just like this photomicrograph, the flowers bloom for themselves, so why bother to feel melancholy about their withering and falling.
