Not the flower, nor the haze, she comes at midnight and leaves at daybreak. She appears brief like a vernal dream, and disappears like morning mist without a trace.
Bai Juyi (Tang Dynasty)
The Flower or the Haze?
This is a love poem. Flowers are not flowers, and fog is not fog. They are both mentioned for a kind of innuendo. You want to talk but soon stop, who will come and who will go? The spring dream may not last long but its beauty lingers on. The clouds gather and scatter, conveying a feeling of melancholy sorry. This poem contains a series of metaphors, which have rhythmic and intricate beauty in the obscurity. It has been composed as a musical tune by later generations and has been widely circulated.
